I came across a great story at the Post Gazette this morning telling the story of 620 hand written “mysterious” letters that arrived at Polish Hill mailboxes last week. The letters, written by two British artists (Lenka Clayton & Michael Crowe), were part of a larger art project in which they “intend to write to everyone in the world”. As they state on their blog, “We hoped these unsolicited letters would prompt neighbourly discussion, spreading across the town, promoting community curiosity”. In April, they started the project by sending a letter to each of the 467 households in the small Irish village of Cushendall, and the second batch to Pittsburgh residents in November.
Some Pittsburgh recipients were delighted by the letters while others were just creeped out, understandably. You can read the letters at the artists’ blog, and I must say…as awesome as this project is, some of the letters are downright creepy! Everything from “Go Steelers”, to a game of tic-tac-toe, to personal messages with people’s names on them. It’s a pretty ambitious project to say the least. I hope I get one in their next batch!!!
