Shut ’em Down!

NY Summer Streets

Why can’t we do this in PGH? In New York City, for 3 consecutive weekends this month, they temporarily shut down several streets to motor vehicles to encourage a pedestrian / bicyclist atmosphere. From 7am to 1pm for three Saturdays, the NY program called Summer Streets opened the streets to an alternative flow of traffic. Imagine shutting off Penn Ave in the Strip to only pedestrian traffic on the weekends. What about Butler in Lawrenceville, Liberty in Bloomfield, Fifth and Forbes in Oakland or Walnut and Ellsworth in Shadyside? It’s a great way to both promote an eco-conscious public and increase foot-traffic to local businesses. Maybe next summer!!!
