What better way to celebrate the new August Wilson Center for African American Culture than what looks like a spectacular night of fashion and music….Fashion Africana. Created by Utopia Model Agency, and presented by the Multicultural Arts Initiative, the September 12th show features a number of exciting events.
There will be a silent auction featuring autographed original artwork from world renown Pittsburgh-based and national artists including Tina Brewer, Thad Mosley, Kathleen Mulcahy and Ron Desmett as well as high-end luxury items from Henne Jewelers and Michael Kobold.
The highlight of the program, obviously, is the Fashion Africana theatrical presentation of design, dance and music inspired by jazz icons such as Thelonious Monk, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone and others. The show features celebrity supermodel Stacey McKenzie and will also feature narration by Malik Yoba, musical performances by trumpeter Sean Jones, the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra, dancer and choreographer Kyle Abraham and will be directed by Pittsburgh playwright Mark Southers.
Sounds like a great time to me. $35 gets you into the show, $50 gets you into the show and afterparty, and $75 gets you into the VIP pre-show reception, show and afterparty. This would definitely be a great way to check out the new August Wilson Center for African American Culture downtown.
