Bonnaroo. Rothbury. Coachella……So many music festivals, so far away. But in its 13th year, only 90 minutes away, is a local music festival that keeps on truckin’ year after year. This year marked my second trip to Masontown, WV’s All Good Festival which is located right outside of Morgantown, pretty much in the middle of nowhere on a mountaintop. The 3 day (well, 3 day, 4 night) camp out festival is right in our backyard and well worth the trip. I can’t verify the numbers, but I overheard attendence being over 30,000. That many people, camping in one place in WV for a weekend…must be good! All Good!
While it’s not as big and notable (or corporate) as the big guys, it does draw a lot of the same names that play at the other mainstream festivals. Some of this year’s lineup included Bob Weir and Ratdog, Moe., Umphree’s McGee, Keller Williams, Les Claypool, STS9, Bassnectar, Ben Harper, Lotus, Yonder Mountain String Band, Dark Star Orchestra and many more. Pittsburgh’s own Jazzam also played a set on the Grassroots stage and tore it up! I can definitely see these guys as a main act in the next few years. Oh, and thanks for the free CDs….already on my ipod.
The stage setup and acoustics are, in my opinion, much better than Post Gazette Pavilion. The bass rattles your bones, the lighting system is top notch, and there are no overlapping acts (which sets this festival apart). The fact that they essentially have two main stages that act as tag team partners is pretty amazing. When one band is done, the next starts playing. Nothing to miss, no feelings hurt.
So get your tent and sleeping bag ready for next year and take the trek down I-79. You won’t be disappointed.
